A small, flexible expedition to discover the ski mountaineering delights of Alaska

Introduction

Local Mountain Guide, Joe Stock was quite categorical – south central Alaska has the best backcountry skiing in the US. We should go and see if he’s right.

Objective

Within an hour’s drive of Anchorage are several incredible backcountry ski zones including the Kenai Mountains where we aim to start the action. We then move on to mythical Valdez then finally to Talkeetna – gateway to Denali and the Alaska Range. Here we fly in to the Central Range by small bush plane, setting up base camp on a glacier for five days unforgettable skiing. Because Alaska is mostly wilderness and undeveloped, trips require flexibility so we go with the flow.

What to expect

A typical day will give around 1,500m of ascent and descent on variable snow though usually spring snow or fresh on a firm base.

Visas and Travel Insurance

Visa – ESTA for some http://www.esta.us/, visa for others and happy days for the American citizens.
It is essential that everyone be well insured for search and rescue, medical costs, repatriation, loss of baggage, personal liability, cancellation etc.

Grade: 11D

Tailor-made option

We can organise this expedition on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your skiing experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

If you wish to discuss any aspect of the expedition or your suitability for it, please phone +44 (0)114 276 3322 or contact us.
