Bolivian Climber 11 August - 1 September 2000
Written by Leader Sue Savege, December 2000
Members of Sue Savege's group had a more troublesome time with the stormy conditions. Most days on the trip experienced snowfall, and as a result, they had to do a fair amount of waiting for weather to improve. It had snowed in Condoriri just before they arrived, but fortunately they had a few clear days while they were there and it did not affect the acclimatisation programme, with the majority of the team climbing Pico Austria (5,100m) and Pequeno Alpamayo (5,337m).
It was snowing again heavily when they arrived at BC for Huayna Potosi (6,094m) and it was apparently "like putting the tents up in a Scottish blizzard". With heavy snow the next day, the team retreated to La Paz for a rest and to allow the weather to settle. As it failed to do so, they realised that it would not be possible to have a reasonable chance on both Illimani and Huayna Potosi. So to maximise their chances on one 6,000m peak, they decided to return to Huayna Potosi for a second attempt and concentrate their efforts on this. Persistence finally paid off and 8 members of the team successfully summited. The trip was nicely rounded off with some members enjoying a days downhill mountain biking in Coroico!
