Mera & Island Peak 22 April - 21 May 2000

Written by Leader Andy Chapman, December 2000

The second of our Mera & Island Peak teams also experienced very mixed weather. Having all made it to the high camp on Mera in clear weather, they were disappointed to wake up to heavy snow and lightning. Although it threatened to clear, more bad weather came in just 2 hours after they decided to descend. After an exciting climb and descent of the Amphu Labtsa, they trekked on to Island Peak base camp. This time, more settled weather allowed them to climb to the new 'summit' of Island Peak. The summit ridge has been broken up by huge crevasses, some are 5-metres wide and would be unsafe to try and cross to make the final 100m horizontal distance. A 40m high 'knoll' has emerged, with a deep crevasse on one side - the climbers made it up to this exposed position in small groups.
