Mera & Island Peak 30 April - 20 May 2000
Written by Leader John Armstrong, December 2000
Heavy snow slowed the team of 12 early on in the trip and only a handful of members made it to the summit of Mera Peak. Having gained more fitness through the duration of the expedition and become fully acclimatised, 10 climbers were very happy to summit on Island Peak. What had been a knock for many early on, ultimately proved that success on Mera is not a prerequisite to climbing Island Peak, the more difficult albeit lower of the two peaks. Many of the group were suprised at how much stronger they felt later on in the expedition. The beauty of the Amphu Labtsa (the high pass crossed at the end of the Hongu valley on the journey from Mera to Island) was also felt to be understated in the expedition itinerary!« Previous report | Next report »
