Island Peak, October 2024

The whole Island Peak team headed out to Nepal on a variety of flights, but gradually migrated towards each other in airport lounges. We were all very excited about the forthcoming trekking and climbing adventures but inevitably the recent devastating floods were in our minds. We had a quick turnaround in Kathmandhu before heading out to Ramechhap the airhead. Bad flying weather caused a delay of a couple of days before we took our flight out to Lukla - on the last flight out for a few days – again, poor flying weather. The trekking up the Khumbu valley was stunning and our route in the main kept us away from the busy Everest Base Camp (EBC) route. The acclimatization profile was spot on despite finding a day on ascent to regain after our delayed flight. After 13 days of travel, trekking, eating, sleeping and acclimatization 8 of our 9 clients headed to the summit on a perfect day. Summit day is a long day out even if using the high camp, but the reward is some fun scrambling and stunning views from the top. At 6,189 metres a high point for many. A long descent saw us arriving in the dark at Chukkung, the highest lodges on our trek in. A long day but worth it to get back to a solid bed. We split on the following day with half the group heading down to Lukla in two long days and the other half heading to EBC. The EBC team were struck by the unseasonal poor flying weather again and took a rather longer route to Kathmandhu and the wonderful hotel food and showers. This was a fabulous trip, wonderfully organised and supported by incredible guides and porters as well as the office team in Kathmandhu ….. and an absolute privilege to lead.
