Bolivian Climber - 5 to 26 July 2003
Written by Leader Mungo Ross, August 2003
After one team member had to return to the UK very unfortunately due to illness, the remaining eight enjoyed generally excellent weather and conditions, climbing five mountains over 5000 metres. All the group climbed Point Austria and Pequeno Alpamayo; on Huayna Potosi two members turned round 200 metres from the summit to descend while four others with three local guides continued to the summit - in white out and gales!
Due to the very dangerous conditions on Illimani, the group opted to visit the Chachacomani region in the central Cordillera Real. This proved to be a great success, with five members reaching a high point of 5,400m on the long southeast ridge of Jankho Laya (5,545m). Two members also made an ascent of another peak (Wally Jakunka - Ed?) above high camp, before the group returned to La Paz. Most of the group had a spectacular end to their trip by making a mountain bike descent of "the most dangerous road in the world."
