Bolivian Climber - 26 July to 16 August 2003

Written by Leader Mungo Ross, August 2003

Despite the weather turning a bit unsettled for the fourth Bolivian Climber expedition this summer, 11 members enjoyed the scheduled itinerary. All the group summited Point Austria, then went on to enjoy a superb day on Pequeno Alpamayo, summiting what they all thought to be a beautiful and challenging mountain. One team member decided to leave the expedition for personal reasons, whilst the rest of the team went on to experience a very stormy night on Huayna Potosi, resulting in only two members summiting after a late start. It was decided that Illimani was by now a reasonable objective, with fresh snow and good anchors to secure the exposed sections. Only two members (with two local guides) summitted, with four other members getting to over 6,000m. A trip of considerable contrast - from the Ritz Hotel in La Paz, to Lake Titicaca and the Island of the Sun, to some very demanding mountain days to well over 6,000m. The Cordillera Real provided challenging mountaineering at altitude only a few hours drive from La Paz.
