NEW Ojos del Salado from Argentina

Ojos del Salado (6893m) is the highest peak in Chile and, after Aconcagua, the second highest in South America. It is the second highest mountain on earth outside the Himalayas and also the world's highest volcano (making it one of the 'Seven Volcanic Summits').

We have organised five expeditions to Ojos, climbing from Chile. In January 2024 we are visiting the eastern side of the mountain and will climb from Argentina. There are no mountain huts on this side and overall it is a more remote experience of the breathtaking Atacama.

The team will fly via Buenos Aires to Catamarca Airport and transfer to Fiambalá before continuing to Cortaderas (3300m). From here you'll spend four nights acclimatising with walks up to 4515m before driving in 4 x 4 vehicles to base camp (5480m) via an intermediate camp at 4350m. The team will climb Cerro Medusa (6,110m) from base camp, then move to a high camp (5750m) on Ojos del Salado. Summit day is typically a 12-hour round trip.

This expedition is suitable for those with a high level of fitness, determination and robustness, with experience of previous arduous, high-altitude treks or climbs and experience of wilderness camping. You must also be mentally prepared for the rigours of a desert environment with extremes of heat, cold and wind on a high and exposed mountain.
